The United Nations (UN) family in Malaysia is represented by the Resident Coordinator (RC) system. The RC system encompasses all organizations of the UN system dealing with operational activities for development regardless of whether or not they have a continuous presence in Malaysia. The RC system brings together the different UN agencies to 'deliver as one' for much greater impact at the country level.

The United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Malaysia is represented by five main UN agencies:

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF)
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
World Health Organisation (WHO)

As part of its mandate, UNDP plays a key role within the United Nations Development Group,  helping to reinforce joint action on development . The Resident Coordinator, who is funded and managed by UNDP, leads the UNCT in Malaysia and is the designated representative of the Secretary General for development operations. Working closely with the Government of Malaysia,  the UNCT advocates the interests and mandates of the UN, drawing on the support and guidance of the entire UN family.

The UNCT in Malaysia aligns its work to specific objectives in the following areas:
  • Support to the national development process: Achieving the MDGs
  • National capacity for development effectiveness
  • Strengthened efforts on initiatives related to HIV/AIDS, gender equality and human rights
  • Strengthened coordination capacity of the UNCT to support the UN reforms
