Facts About UNDP National Goodwill Ambassador
Nicol Ann David
  • Nicol Ann David was born on August 26, 1983 in Penang, the youngest of a family of five.
  • She currently ranks No.1 in the world for the professional women’s squash, a title she has held since 2006.
  • Nicol began playing quash at the age of 5, and began her formal training at the age of 8.
  • Nicol was the youngest ever player to win the Women’s World Junior Championships which she did at the age of 15. No other junior has beaten three top 20 players.
  • Her first international tournament and first international win was in 1994 in Hong Kong in the Under 13 event and she joined the WISPA Professional circuit in 2000. She won her first WISPA tournament in the Finnish Open in 2000. She won the World Junior title twice in a row.
  • On 4 December 2005, she won the Hong Kong World Open to become the youngest world champion.
  • On 25 November 2006, she defended her World Open title, becoming the first Malaysian athlete to win a world championship title for the 2nd consecutive time, and the fourth person in history to retain the world championship.

  • Nicol was recently named Asia’s Sportsperson of the Year. She was also named WSPA’s Player of The Year for 2005
  • Despite the pressure of international squash Nicol performed commendably in the SPM (equivalent to O-Levels), scoring 7 A’s out of 10 subjects
  • Nicol prides herself in her strong family values and desire to see each commitment through
  • Nicol’s work on development issues began officially in 2004 when she was appointed as Malaysia’s first National Goodwill Ambassador
  • Since 2004, Nicol has supported the work of UNDP in Malaysia by speaking to the youth on issues such as HIV/AIDS, poverty, volunteerism, and raising awareness about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
  • For 2008, Nicol will travel around Malaysia on behalf of UNDP to visit project sites and to help bring attention to the plight of the poor in the country

FUN FACTS
  • Nicol’s favourite food is Penang Char Kuey Teow, Laksa and her mother’s cooking
  • Nicol trains twice a day, between 2-4 hours in total
  • She trains at Squash Club in Amsterdam, which has been her professional “home” for 5 years
  • Nicol reckons that Penang is a great tourist destination within Malaysia
  • Mathematics was her best subject in school
  • When on tour, Nicol has at least three pairs of sports shoes with her
  • Nicol carries a notebook wherever she goes and sometimes sketches while on the court
  • When she was a young girl, Nicol dreamed of one day becoming an engineer
