 Related Events

Background

The decision to set up a Natural History Museum was made at the Fifth National Biodiversity and Biotechnology Council meeting on 29th September 2006. A Natural History Museum (NHM) is crucial for Malaysia as it will play a pivotal role as a national depository for Malaysia’s biodiversity resources. NHM provides an important platform for systematic documentation of the flora and fauna resources to meet the objectives of the Global Taxonomic Initiative (GTI), under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in which Malaysia is a signatory.

Development Objectives
The objective of this project is to develop a framework for the establishment of a Natural History Museum in Malaysia. This project supports conservation; promotes sustainable utilization of components of biological diversity and enables benefit sharing of the genetic resources found in the country. It builds upon local expertise and draws from international experience through technological transfer and capacity building. NHM will also cater as a centre for communication, education and public awareness on biodiversity conservation in Malaysia.

Activities
  • Study and review current status of museums and herbarium collections in Malaysia
  • Hold consultative meetings and workshops with stakeholders to obtain input and feedback on the NHM
  • Conduct a fact finding study visit to review successful examples of NHM
  • Formulate and prepare a final report and documentation on the findings and the framework for NHM
  • Conduct a NHM pilot project
Expected Outputs
  • Framework for the establishment of NHM developed
  • Pilot project to improve curation standards completed
