Background
The importance of mangrove forests is now well known, especially after the Tsunami tragedy in December 2004. Mangrove forests provide ecological and socio-economic benefits. The interdependent relationship between local communities and and the mangrove forest is critical. Fishing and other livelihood activities of the community are highly dependent upon the continued existence of a healthy mangrove ecosystem.

Development Objective
The main objective of this project is to regenerate the depleted mangrove forest in Setiu so that the sustainability of the mangrove ecosystem in that area can be persevered and can provide sustainable livelihoods for the local community living in that area. This will contribute to Malaysia’s National Biodiversity Policy and to both Goal 1: Eradication of Poverty and Goal 7: Ensuring Environmental Sustainability, of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

  1. Conduct awareness training and workshop
  2. Formulate local cooperative
  3. Collect demographic & socio-economic information
  4. Prepare Management Plan
  5. Formulate strategies for conservation and forest rehabilitation
  6. Design & implement awareness campaigns and activities
Expected Outputs
  1. Mangrove forest restored in Setiu lagoon
  2. Sustainable Use and Production of mangrove ecosystem resources established
  3. Awareness and education programme for various target groups implemented
  4. Sustainable Management Plan for the Mangrove ecosystem is developed
