Efficient use of energy in the industrial sector

 Related Events

Background
The Malaysian Industrial Energy Efficiency Improvement Project (MIEEIP) was developed to improve energy efficiency in Malaysia’s industrial sector. It hopes to achieve this by removing barriers to efficient industry energy use and creating institutional capacity in policy development, planning, research and implementation of sustainable energy projects.

Development Objectives
  • To implement appropriate measures such as demonstrating the effectiveness of energy saving technologies and financial incentives for the manufacturing of energy efficient industrial equipment
  • To provide highly skilled energy audit and engineering services, project financing, and training and information to plant managers and operators
  • To implement energy efficiency and other large scale efficiency programmes by strengthening the institutional capacity for energy programme design and implementation
  • To build capacity of existing organizations to provide energy management advisory services and energy engineering and services
  • To create sustainable follow-up programmes after the completion of the project that will build on the achievements and experiences gained, and where necessary, improve the activities and deliverables
Activities
  • Establish energy use benchmarks and a system for the dissemination of end-use benchmarking information to industries
  • Conduct energy audits
  • Provide information on energy efficient equipment and energy rating programmes
  • Set up an industrial testing facility to label equipment
  • Support the development of Energy Service Companies
  • Implement energy efficiency demonstration projects to confirm the applicability as well as the technical and economic feasibility of advanced energy efficient technologies
  • Identify the potential improvements and new designs for locally manufactured industrial equipment
  • Create an enabling environment for the participation of financial institutions
Expected Outputs
  • Energy use benchmarks for eight industrial sectors that can be used as a guide in energy efficiency and energy conservation efforts
  • Improved energy efficiency levels in industries
  • Increased awareness on and greater use of energy efficient practices and technology application within industries
  • A business sector capable of meeting the energy efficiency challenges of the identified industrial sectors
