Involving Islamic religious leaders in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support

 Related Events

Background
About two thirds of HIV infections in Malaysia are the result of sharing of needles by injecting drug users. Most of these are males and Muslim. To prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and reduce its impact, the mobilization and involvement of all in society is crucial. Community leaders, including religious leaders, have a major role to play in prevention programmes and activities.

Development Objectives
The objective of this project is to ensure that the general public is better informed about HIV/AIDS and prevention and care efforts. To achieve this objective, this project aims to sensitize religious leaders to the issues and the methods of preventing the spread of the disease as well as to assist them in their efforts to inform their communities and take care of those infected and affected. As the problem is most severe in Muslim communities, this project will involve only Islamic religious leaders for a start.

Activities
  • Review existing best practices related to HIV/AIDS prevention initiatives in other Islamic countries including Senegal and Uganda. Identify and define approaches and methodologies suitable for Malaysia especially in the context of Islam and carry out a basic assessment procedure
  • Develop a training module on HIV and Islam, covering general information on the epidemic, modes of transmission, preventive and care measures as well as basic assessment procedures
  • Identify candidates to be trained as trainers and conduct national workshops to implement the training module with the trained facilitators
  • Distribute and test the training modules among the wider Muslim community
  • Organise a dialogue on HIV/AIDS among religious leaders
Expected Outputs
  • Training module on HIV and Islam
  • Report on the national workshops and dialogue among religious leaders
  • Provide policy recommendations based on pilot tests and feedback from use of the training manual, including recommendations for involving religious leaders of other faith to work towards reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS and provide care and support to those infected and affected by the disease
