The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN's global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. We are on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. As they develop local capacity, they draw on UNDP and our wide range of partners. World leaders have pledged to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, including the overarching goal of cutting poverty in half by 2015. UNDP's network links and coordinates global and national efforts to reach these Goals.
UNDP in Malaysia
In Malaysia, UNDP provides technical advisory services and support for strategic development projects and capacity building in support of continued efforts to eradicate pockets of extreme poverty, improve gender equality, reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS, promote and protect human rights and enhance environmental management. UNDP also supports Malaysia's aspirations to achieve development gains in poorer countries through South-South cooperation. Towards these objectives, the UNDP Country Office draws on a world of experience, expertise and resources, as well as those available through UNDP's global development network. The office nurtures and builds strong alliances with civil society, the private sector and development agencies and organisations.
UNDP is fully committed to supporting Malaysia’s national priorities and the implementation of national medium and long-term development plans such as the 9th Malaysia Plan and the National Vision Policy. As part of the UN Country Team, UNDP continues to assist Malaysia to meet the targets and commitments adopted at global meetings and conventions.

UNDP's Work in Malaysia
UNDP’s work in the country is governed by our Country Programme, developed in broad consultation with the Malaysian government and multiple stakeholders. The Country Programme was endorsed by UNDP’s Executive Board in 2007. All projects are approved by the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister’s Department, Malaysia and UNDP. The Country Programme covering the period of 2008 to 2011 focuses on progress beyond the MDGs and addressing Malaysia’s most pressing development concerns. Through local initiatives, we pilot new and innovative development methodologies that can be adopted and scaled up throughout the country. At the same time, we are working closely with the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department to support the integration of a human rights-based approach to development in national strategies and policies. Our country programme also consciously attempts to link strategic policy initiatives with downstream pilot projects so that our work is informed by local realities and that our projects support national development direction and is consistent with the national development plans. Through our country programme, our projects on the ground are broadly guided by three main pillars: Fostering Inclusive Globalization and Promoting Inclusive Growth; Improved Quality of Life through Sustainable Environmental Management and Promoting the Global Partnership for Development. In addition, gender equality and women’s empowerment, Information Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) and partnerships with the private sector are incorporated as cross-cutting issues.
