Halting and reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS remains the only MDG yet to be achieved in Malaysia. In the 2 decades since the first HIV/AIDS case was reported in Malaysia, numbers of new cases have risen exponentially. HIV/AIDS is now at a dangerous point. By the end of 2004, roughly 64,000 Malaysians were reported infected with HIV, of whom some 8,500 had developed AIDS. In Malaysia, injecting drug use is the main factor responsible for the spread of HIV/AIDS, accounting for some three quarters of infections. In view of this, and in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the United Nations, UNCT and United Nations Association of Malaysia (UNAM) jointly organised a Poster Design Competition, inviting aspiring and artistic students to voice their opinions through artwork of any kind. We invited Malaysian youth to think of ways that they could make a difference in tackling these problems, and express these views through art and design on these 4 sub-themes: Youth and Drugs, Drugs and its Link to HIV/AIDS, Reversing the Spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015 and Effects of Drugs and HIV/AIDS on Society. About 150 entries from all over Malaysia were received. The standard of entries was very high, such that the National Art Gallery requested that the 2 best entrants in each of the 4 categories be exhibited for 2 weeks at the Gallery. The 4 first prize posters are being reproduced into 30,000 postcards for distribution on World AIDS Day 2005 in Malaysia. Students learnt about the danger of drugs and HIV/AIDS, and have volunteered themselves for further participation in HIV/AIDS events. We are pleased to share with you the 8 winning posters here.
