(18-04-2008) UNDP and SRB Campaign on River Safety in Kapit
UNDP and SRB Campaign on River Safety in Kapit Print E-mail
Express boats arriving at the jetty at Kapit, which are the main means of transport that currently link urban areas with the interiors of Sarawak Getting medical and other supplies to rural areas is a considerable challenge, often requiring a whole day’s journey up the river Since 2007, UNDP and the Sarawak Rivers Board has been working with children and community leaders to train them in basic life-saving skills such as CPR. Here, little Rachel Sebastian, 7, a student at SK Ng Kain shows her classmates how it is done Dr. Steven Chow, President of the Federation of Private Medical Practitioners Associations of Malaysia, conducting free skin screening for students at SK Ng Kain as part of the organization’s outreach activities Safety training on the water – it is important that all river users, young and old, know how to respond during times of emergency, as well as how to prevent accidents by understanding navigational signs A boy demonstrates his swimming skills As rivers remain the lifeline for many rural folks, it is imperative that they are empowered to make safe and smart choices on the water Students of SK Ng Kain listening to a talk by the Sarawak Rivers Board A safety instructor demonstrating the proper use of life jackets Although Sarawak is moving toward sustainable forest management, logging activities continue to be part of the state’s economy An Iban boy at Rumah Gare preparing for dinner at the communal ruai or living space The traditional Iban welcome to the longhouse consists of dancing, music and the miring ceremony Specialist medical care is hard to come by in rural areas – the longhouse community waiting to see the doctor at the makeshift clinic Children exploring the wonders of ICT with SIWT Project Manager Sharon Ng (right) and safety instructor Lynn Chew (left)
